"Venus In Furs" is a cover by Ängie, released on April 6th, 2018, originally released by the band Velvet Underground in 1967. It is the seventh and last track on Ängie's debut EP, Suicidal Since 1995. The song got a music video, on a double feature with the second single in the EP, "Here For My Habits".

Background

"'Venus In Furs' is my favorite song from Velvet Underground and Lou Reed has always been one of my biggest inspirations" - said Ängie on Instagram Stories about the cover being on the album.

Theme

This song is named for, and based on, Leopold von Sacher-Masoch’s 1870 novella Venus in Furs, in which the male main character seeks to be enslaved by his fur-adorned lover.

The song and its topic challenged songwriting conventions at the time, celebrating sexual masochism out in the open.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather
Whiplash girlchild in the dark
Comes in bells, your servant, don't forsake him
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart

[Verse 2]
Downy sins of streetlight fancies
Chase the costumes she shall wear
Ermine furs adorn the imperious
Severin, Severin awaits you there

[Chorus]
I am tired, I am weary
I could sleep for a thousand years
A thousand dreams that would awake me
Different colors made of tears

[Verse 3]
Kiss the boot of shiny, shiny leather
Shiny leather in the dark
Tongue of thongs, the belt that does await you
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart

[Verse 4]
Severin, Severin, speak so slightly
Severin, down on your bended knee
Taste the whip, in love not given lightly
Taste the whip, now bleed for me

[Chorus]
I am tired, I am weary
I could sleep for a thousand years
A thousand dreams that would awake me
Different colors made of tears

[Outro]
Shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather
Whiplash girlchild in the dark
Severin, your servant comes in bells, please don't forsake him
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart

Trivia

  • Ängie chose the cover to be on the double music video with "Here For My Habits" because she knew she didn't have the budget to do a big video for 3 songs on the EP, and she couldn't envision any of her songs with simple music videos, so she decided to use a cover that she wasn't as attached to.[1]
