"Down By The Bay" is a song by Ängie produced by Harrison First. It is the eleventh from their second studio album, Follow The White Rabbit.

Background

The song was written and recorded on August 28th, 2020, on Ängie's house in a session with Harrison First. She had written the chorus and first verse before the session and came up with the rest as they recorded te track.

On that day, Harrison did a 1 hour live stream on Youtube showcasing the session, in which they also started recording "Summer In The City".[1] After his stream, Ängie also did two live streams on her Instagram showing more of the process of the two songs being made.[2] Later, Harrison First revealed on his Telegram group that the session was to work on new material for their second album.

On January 23rd, 2021, Ängie mentioned the song again on her Instagram Story, saying that she can't wait to release it: "[...] It's honestly my favorite song I've ever made. Shout out to Harrison First for being my number one partner in crime when it comes to making music."[3]

Theme

On the livestream of the session, Ängie said that although it seems like like the song is about a person, it's actually about a place. More specifically, it's about her town Nynäshamn and how even though being there by the bay is a safe place for her, she has to leave it because it's destructive.

[Chrous]
Down by the bay where the ocean plays
That pretty medolies that makes me want to stay
My heart is stuck here between these waves
It's where I came from and this is where I'm safe

[Verse 1]
A tainted love from memories
And made up of a remedy (?)
I hate it cause I'm loving it too much
I want to leave and God, I will
Break up, get my money
But something here is pulling up my sleeve

[Verse 2]
A beauty I just can't deny
Wanna stay right by your side
But if I do I know my life will suck
People I don't really like
Makes me feel like a sunrise (?)
I don't know why it makes my mind smile

[Chorus]
Down by the bay where the ocean plays
That pretty medolies that makes me want to stay
My heart is stuck here between these waves
It's where I came from and this is where I'm safe

[Bridge]
Drinking by the bay I end up crying
Nothing is enough and I keep lying
Tell myself that I don't feel like dying, hey
I hate this town, I have to run away
I love this town, I need to run away

[Chorus]
Down by the bay where the ocean plays
That pretty medolies that makes me want to stay
My heart is stuck here between these waves
It's where I came from and this is where I'm safe

[Verse 3]
I fight between success and lies
Telling them that I don't mind
But somewhere in my heart the word still stings
Like a junkie on a run
Sharping moments, fucking lush
I need to stop ignoring my damn guts

[Verse 4]
A lovely side I wanna touch
Reaching out just to be judged
I know you feel that I'm a bit too much
I want to show my scars out loud
Wanna say, "My soul has drowned"
But we all know, that shit ain't allowed

[Chorus]
Down by the bay where the ocean plays
The pretty melodies that makes me want to stay
My heart is stuck here between these waves
This is where I came from and this is where I'm safe

[Chorus]
Down by the bay where the ocean plays
The pretty melodies that makes me want to stay
My heart is stuck here between these waves
This is where I came from and this is where I'm safe

[Outro]
This is where I'm safe
This is where I'm safe
This is where I'm safe
This is where I'm safe
